Fragmented Transformations

In an interdisciplinary approach, the cultural, political, linguistic and historical conditions and obstacles of transformations are examined. Extended by cultural and regional perspectives on transformations, the ability of societies to change is analysed in the areas of shared heritage, new nationalisms, innovations and energy, security as well as sustainability transformation, and fragmented transformations in the Baltic Sea region are made visible with the help of historical and current land use patterns.

Virtuelle Hochschule Ostseeraum

Virtuelle Hochschule Ostseeraum is an international, cross-institutional and interdisciplinary project that aims to establish a new virtual learning environment at the University of Greifswald and promote collaboration between the universities in the Baltic Sea region.

Baltic Peripeties

“Baltic Peripeties. Narratives of Reformations, Revolutions and Catastrophes” is a DFG-funded international research training group established in April 2021 at the universities of Greifswald, Tartu and Trondheim. By applying the Aristotelian notion of ‘peripety’, the central turning point in a story, we inquire about narrative constructions of events, turning points or even catastrophes in the Baltic Sea region in an interdisciplinary network.

History and Culture of the Baltic Sea Region

The master's program provides cultural competencies for studying the Baltic Sea region and engaging with the region. Specialization in the culturally and historically complex region encompasses the study of languages, literatures and histories in interdisciplinary seminars and lectures. Research-based teaching provides students with a topical and innovative study environment as well as the direct transfer of research results into discourses relevant to society.

Research Centre for Manors in the Baltic Sea Region

The research project Research Centre for Manors in the Baltic Sea Region is concerned with the study of post-medieval manor houses from 1500 onwards. The estimated 12,000 to 15,000 estates are still spread across all the countries bordering the Baltic Sea and thus form a central component of the unique cultural landscape of the Baltic Sea region. Between 2021 and 2024, the project will be funded in equal parts by the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

Young People's Network for Balticness

The aim of this Council of the Baltic Sea States’ supported project is to engage young people in discourses about the Baltic Sea region and the region’s identity. In summer and winter universities, students from all over the world learn about how semantics, discourses, cultural memory, mobilities, democratic engagements and spatial constructions shape identities within and across the region.
