Land|Rettung - Future-Proof Reorganisation of Emergency Care in a District

New approaches in the field of healthcare management are required to ensure future emergency care in rural areas. In the pilot region of Vorpommern-Greifswald, innovative types of healthcare are being introduced in order to identify potential ways of improving emergency healthcare services.

The goal of the Land|Rettung (‘district rescue’) project was to counteract the changing demographic and structural conditions. By introducing various telemedicine elements, the emergency medical care structures in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald were expanded while offering additional alternatives for treatment.

Furthermore, the project focused on training and strengthening resuscitation skills in the population in the event of an observed cardiovascular arrest.

In addition to putting innovative types of telemedicine into practice, Land|Rettung strived to closely dovetail the work of emergency rescue services with the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (Kassenärztliche Vereinigung).

Land|Rettung was funded by the Federal Joint Committee’s Innovation Fund with 5.4 million euros over the course of three years. The project period ran from 12/2016 to 03/2020.

Project management: District of Vorpommern-Greifswald, Eigenbetrieb Rettungsdienst

Consortium partners: University of Greifswald, Greifswald University Medicine, Steinbeis University Berlin.

Land|Retter (‘district rescuers’) are mobile volunteer first aiders. The goal of deploying such mobile first aiders is to keep the non-treatment interval, i.e. the time between the onset of cardiac arrest and the start of resuscitation measures, as short as possible in order to avoid or minimise consequential damage.
