Netz-Stabil - Grid Stability with Wind and Bioenergy

Secure and optimised operation of the electricity grid

The Netz-Stabil research network assessed the important questions for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as a state providing considerable amounts of renewable energy. It  investigated how a stable and secure energy supply can be achieved without fossil fuels and thus essentially on the basis of fluctuating energy generation (wind and solar power).

The funds for the collaborative project "Grid stability with wind and bioenergy, storages and loads under consideration of an optimal sector coupling" came from the ESF (European Social Fund for Germany) during the 2014 to 2020 funding period.

Coordinated by the University of Rostock (Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, Institute of Electrical Power Engineering), Prof. Hans-Günter Eckel (Power Electronics and Electrical Drives) investigated which energy systems such as wind farms, biogas plants and storage systems as well as control technology concepts can contribute to grid stability and how these services can be optimised through further innovations.

The task of the University of Greifswald, coordinated by the Chair of Public Law: Finance Law, Environmental and Energy Law and the Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM) as an affiliated institute, was to evaluate the identified possible technical solutions from a legal and economic perspective. Based on the results, proposals will be developed for the adjustment of the legal and political framework at both federal and state level in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
