Faculty, University and Town

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is one of the University of Greifswald’s founding faculties. The faculty offers bachelor’s and master’s degree courses as well as traditional teacher training and Diplom programmes. Greifswald’s degree courses perform well or very well in numerous rankings. In contrast to the situation at many anonymous large-scale universities, lecturers here often know their students by name. In addition to research and teaching, the extensive activities of the faculty members – e.g. public lecture series or international festivals – contribute to Greifswald’s diverse cultural landscape as well and have a far-reaching impact on the local society and region.

Founded in 1456, the University of Greifswald is one of the oldest universities in the Western World and the second oldest university in Northern Europe. In many respects, Greifswald is a place where tradition and modernity complement each other in a sensible way.

Traversed by the river Ryck, the University and Hanseatic town of Greifswald is situated in a charming scenery between Germany’s largest islands: Rügen and Usedom. With its 54,000 inhabitants and 10,400 students, Greifswald is a typical student town – some even say that Greifswald is a university with a town. The majority of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities’ departments and institutions are located in the historic old town, with the market square at its centre. The metropolitan regions of Hamburg and Berlin, approx. 250 km away, can be easily reached by motorway or train.
