Olga Shparaga (b. 1974 in Minsk)is philosopher, PhD, till 2021 taught philosophy at the European College of Liberal Arts in Minsk (ECLAB), which she co-founded in 2014. She studied philosophy in Belarus and Germany and first taught at European Humanities University (EHU) in Minsk (2001-2004) and after 2005 till 2014 in Vilnius, as EHU was forcibly closed in Minsk and reopened in Vilnius as Belarusian University in Exile. 2000-2014 she was member of the editorial board of the philosophical and cultural studies journal “Topos” at EHU and 2006-2014 she was co-editor of the intellectual journal “Novaja Eŭropa” (“New Europe”) in Minsk.

Olga Shparaga was a Research Fellow at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Pedagogical University of Freiburg and Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf (Germany), Center for Theoretical Study (CTS, Prague, Czech Republic), at the Warsaw University of Technology (Poland), New School for Social Research (New York, 2017) and Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (2022). Olga Shparaga is a member of the scientific council of the Ideology and Politics Journal and the filia Women Foundation Council, in 2023 she was the co-leader of the project “Miteinander politisch sein. On the meaning of solidarity in protest movements in authoritarian contexts” at the Institute for Applied Democracy and Social Research (anDemos, Dresden). Olga Shparaga has published three monographs. Her second book “Community-after-Holocaust. Toward an inclusive society” (Minsk, ECLAB-books, 2018, in Russian) was awarded by The International Congress of Belarusian Studies as the best philosophical book 2019. She also edited seven academic volumes, among which are: Feminist (Art)critique (co-edited with Irina Solomatina and Volha Hapeyeva), Kaunas: Taurapolis, 2015. – 680 p.             Olga Shparaga is a co-founder of the Feminist group in the coordination council of Belarusian opposition started by politician Svjatlana Tsikhanouskaya in august 2020. Because of the activity in this group Olga Shparaga was imprisoned for 15 days in October 2020. To escape a looming criminal trial, she fled to Vilnius. Olga now lives in exile and is since July 2022 a fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM, Vienna, https://www.iwm.at/fellow/olga-shparaga).

Her third book The Face of the Revolution is Female. The Case of Belarus was published in German by Suhrkamp in 2021 (https://www.suhrkamp.de/rights/book/olga-shparaga-the-face-of-the-revolution-is-female-fr-9783518127698). This book was also published in Russian und in Lithuanian in Vilnius and received the “Ales-Adamovich-Award” 2021 of the International PEN Belarus. In 2024 Olga Shparaga was awarded with the “Voltaire Prize for Tolerance, International Understanding and Respect for Differences” by the Potsdam University.

Olga Shparaga, Dr.ⁱⁿ phil., Jg. 1974 in Minsk, ist eine belarussische Philosophin. Sie lehrte bis 2021 Philosophie an European College of Liberal Arts in Minsk (ECLAB), welches sie im Jahr 2014 mitbegründet hat. Sie studierte Philosophie in Minsk und Bochum. Olga Shparaga ist Mitbegründerin der Femgruppe im Koordinationsrat rund um die belarussische Oppositionspolitikerin Svjatlana Tsichanouskaja. Als Mitgliederin der feministischen Gruppe wurde sie im Oktober 2020 für 15 Tage inhaftiert. Um einem drohenden Strafprozess zu entgehen, floh sie nach Vilnius.

Im 2021 erschien ihr Buch Die Revolution hat ein weibliches Gesicht. Der Fall Belarus im Suhrkamp Verlag. Auf Russisch wurde das Buch in Vilnius im Jahr 2021 herausgegeben und vom Ales-Adamowitsch-Preis von PEN International Belarus ausgezeichnet. Im Dezember 2022 erschien das Buch mit einem neuen Kapitel auf Litauisch. Olga Shparaga ist derzeit Fellow am Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen in Wien. Ihre Arbeit wurde vom Voltaire-Preis für Toleranz, Völkerverständigung und Respekt vor Differenz 2024 der Universität Potsdam ausgezeichnet.
