Abstract:
When did globalization begin in Sweden? Müller argues that Sweden’s path to one of the most globalized nations in the world began in the early 18th century. Partly, it was an outcome of the loss of the great power status in 1721, partly, a series of adjustments to new situation in the Baltic, Europe, and the world. Müller will discuss Sweden’ path to globalization via three specific cases: the narrative of Swedish East India Company, one of the most successful “small” chartered companies in Eurasian trade, the rise of Swedish trade and tramp shipping in southern Europe, and Swedish attempts to enter the Atlantic trade in the West Indies and the US. Economic policy (mercantilism) as well as institutional infrastructure and markets for Swedish goods and shipping services will be examined. Special attention will be paid to the role of Sweden’s maritime neutrality.

A full paper will be available upon request about one week before the lecture.
